Google has 45 accounts on Twitter — why not just buy them?

twitter-googleIf you love something so much that you want to buy it, you shouldn’t profess your love for it to the world. It will just increase the price.

So it’s a little puzzling that Google, which probably wants to buy Twitter just because it’s hot, pointed out in a blog post today that the search giant has 45 different official accounts on Twitter. That’s a lot of love for the micro-blogging service. Google has accounts for everything, including Twitter.com/GoogleArabia for Arabic Tweets. There’s also Twitter.com/DataLiberation, which advances Google’s goal of organizing all of the world’s data, even if its owners don’t want to liberate their data. And then there’s Twitter.com/GooglePolicyIt for policy issues that Google cares about in Italy. Meanwhile, Google executives keep talking about how it’s important for them to expand into real-time search.

Now if Google keeps up the love for Twitter, the founders at Twitter are just going to get more and more excited about how much Google will bid for them. If I were Google’s mergers and acquisitions negotiators, I’d start a Twitter account dubbed “Twitter is just so 2008.”

Google is becoming evil if not already. Just what they said they never wanted to do. Tsk.

  • Oh Interesting!

    Okay

Google is a huge company. Different teams and different departments will have different reasons to start a Twitter account. There's nothing in this post that isn't completely subjective and just plain lame.

Because 45 twitter accounts are free?
  • And Microsoft has 65 Twitter accounts - likely more, since I know of a few that aren't on this list - so should they just buy Twitter as well?

  • Big companies love to pile up the accounts, it appears (and not just Google).
  • Why Google is in love with Twitter? Does Google is interested in buying Twitter to expand its real time search..??

Google buying Twitter would be a huge mistake. Aside from signing up millions of geeks, what has Twitter really delivered. Yes, kudos to Twitter for creating a buzz about the service. But, really, there is no business model and this may go down in history as a top 5 fad
  • I liked your comment about data liberation.

Google should give the world free anonymized top search terms data in real-time.
  • They are designing their own... http://wave.google.com

  • I bet they dont have all of their accounts for twitter rolled into 1 gmail account, seeing you can only have 5 rolled into 1 with gmail!!
  • 45 twitter accounts? I want to know how many data centers they have monitoring twitter's output :)
  • Twitter IS just so 2008.
