InterWest funds Exalt to meet rising backhauling demand

Exalt Communications, provider of wireless backhauling services, is one of five companies sharing a $21 million investment from InterWest Partners, reports VentureWire. Neither the amount of the investment nor its intended purpose have been disclosed.

Based in Campbell, Calif., Exalt has witnessed an increase in demand recently as more people send rich media — videos, photos, texts — through regular wireless networks. Accordingly, backhauling has become even more critical to keep networks congestion-free. Backhauling refers to processes used to divert traffic from regular wireless networks so that they don’t get too overloaded. Exalt offers a microwave radio method to transfer data between base stations and end users that circumvent the regular networks to keep traffic at a reasonable level.

The four other portfolio companies to receive funds were project management consultancy Amec, cancer therapeutics developer Drais Pharmaceuticals, biotech firm RadioRx and computer timer builder SpectraLinear.

Exalt’s past funding history has not been made public.
