Untangle raises $8 million round to expand overseas for open-source security appliances

Untangle has raised $8 million in a second round of funding for an overseas expansion of its open-source networking and security business.

Investors include CMEA Ventures and Rustic Canyon Ventures, the same companies that invested $10.5 million Untangle’s first round of funding, according to VentureWire. (Our previous coverage of Untangle is here).

The company has raised about $20 million to date. Based in San Mateo, Calif. and founded in 2005, the company makes network and security appliances that sit between corporate PCs and the open Internet. The appliances serve as gateways which provide a variety of applications such as blocking spam and viruses. The company has 31 employees. It is close to profitability and expects to raise more funding in the fall, according to CEO Bob Walters.

The company competes with SonicWall and Barracuda Networks, neither of which is open source.
