[...] While the twin movie and game approach is risky, it reflects a growing trend in the industry. Video games have become so lucrative that movie companies have become loathe to give up the rights for games based on the movie properties to game companies.
Call me old-fashioned, but here's a neat idea. How bout making a video game that's just, I dunno, a video game? At the same time, let's let Hollywood just make... movies. Yes, it sounds like a good idea to try to "ride the wave" of an initial success, but this obsessive-compulsive urge to turn an engaging video game or a good story into a cross-genre multimedia franchise is a risky financial gamble, and smacks of a screaming lack of interest in truly being creative. Too often the film or video game "based on" another thing is a pale shadow of the original, which only cheapens the overall "franchise" developers are trying to create. Instead of trying to force the creative process to fit their financial models, maybe movie and video game producers need to get better at determining when a story or concept has run its course.
