Online storage fuels demand for storage caches

gear6.jpgAs more consumers use the Internet for storage, the demand for technologies that make the infrastructure possible is going up. That’s good for Gear6, a Mountain View, Calif., company that makes centralized storage caching equipment.

Gear6 has raised $10 million in second-round financing from Horizon Ventures, US Venture Partners and InterWest Partners.

The company makes a line of CACHEfx caching appliances which are expandable as more storage is added.  The equipment is used in data centers as a cost-effective way to improve performance and cut overall storage costs. Too often the two-way communication to storage devices is a bottleneck in a data center. Customers using such solutions include enterprises that are embracing virtualization technologies.

Gear6 recently announced that Sony Pictures Imageworks used its equipment to accelerate its image-rendering applications.
