Big Tent, social networking for groups, raises $5 million

Big Tent, a company that offers social networking features based around groups that you create, has raised $5 million in Series A funding from Menlo Ventures and return backer Mohr Davidow Ventures.

San Francisco-based Big Tent is focused on families, groups of friends and neighborhoods, rather than college students like Facebook or demi-celebrities, like Myspace. Big Tent’s features are designed for the types of groups you already see in communities, like youth soccer teams, parent-teach associations and book clubs. Among other things, you can create subgroups within a group (maybe “6th grade” within the PTA group of a middle school), and easily turn a group member into a group administrator.
