Xtera, optical networking company, continues acquisition strategy — buys AscenVision

Xtera Communications Inc., a Allen, Texas maker of optical-networking transport systems for the Internet backbone, has acquired San Jose, Calif.’s AscenVision Technology, a provider of wide-area network traffic management technology that allows more efficient use of available bandwidth.

The amount was undisclosed.

Here’s the statement.

Xtera is still a nine-year-old private company, one of those companies that has sucked up a huge amount of capital, struggled through the downturn and then forced to restart with a fresh infusion of capital in 2003.

It has no plowed through about $212 million in funding, with a recent injection of $52 million coming in August from New Enterprise Associates, ARCH Venture Partners and Wellcome Trust of London — to help it acquire other companies, including the recently bought AlanDick UK.

Previous investors included Sevin Rosen Funds, ComVentures, Star Ventures, EDF Ventures, Hook Partners, Rho Ventures, CenterPoint Venture Fund, InterWest Partners and Berkeley International.
