Spodradio, a radio and podcast “hub,” gets $10M from Benchmark
Spodradio, which meshes radio and podcasting (thus the name), said it has raised $10 million in a second round of funding.
The funding comes from Benchmark Capital Europe and Baytech, a Munich-based VC firm that backed spodradio in a first $2.4 million round in 2005.
The company offers mobile carriers a software application for handsets that delivers audio content (radio broadcasts and podcasts) along with “synchronized” and “relevant” visual content, is said.
Users can access live radio (from both FM and Internet radio stations), and soon will also be able to access personalized radio services and on-demand radio, the company said.
Furthermore, spodradio is the first carrier-grade system for Mobile Podcasting. The company delivers a high quality service to mobile phones over-the air, without the need of a PC or an iPod. As a result spodradio provides mobile users with total control over their audio content, as it offers them a choice from a catalogue of hundreds of radio stations and thousands of podcast channels from all over the world.
The company is based in Stuttgart, Germany, but has an office in San Mateo.
